This lesser known and more challenging route offers a trip to the basecamp of Makalu (8481 m) – the 5th highest mountain in the world. The trek starts from Tumlingtar, east Nepal, either by plane or by helicopter depending upon the weather conditions. Acclimate along the trail while enjoying views of some of the 8000 meter peaks: Kanchenjunga, Makalu among them.

The trek starts from Tumlingtar, east Nepal, either by plane or by helicopter depending upon the weather conditions. Acclimate along the trail while enjoying views of some of the 8000 meter peaks: Kanchenjunga, Makalu among them. This strenuous trek leads upstream along the Arun river across the terraced fields and villages to reach Chichira. We leave the main trail and cross the Arun river en route to Makalu Base Camp. You’ll encounter and cross three difficult passes of the Sherpani Pass (6,110m.), West Col (6,135m.) and Mingbo La (5,817m.) during this trek.
