Mt. Manaslu

Mt. Manaslu

Manaslu lies in the Kali Gandaki Valley in the Himalaya of Nepal. This is the 8th highest mountain in the world and it was previously known as Kutang which reflects the Tibetan word for ‘flat place’, describing the mountain’s summit contour. It was renamed Manaslu which comes from the Sanskrit word “Manasa” meaning “intellect” or “soul”.

First summitted in 1956 by the Japanese, there are presently about 6 different routes on Manaslu. The south face of this “mountain of intellect” is arguably the toughest in climbing history. We begin at Samagaon and Sama Gompa, where Makalu is referred to as Kambung- after a local god. Views from Manaslu include many mountains of Annapurna and the Ganesh Himal Range as well as the Tibetan Plateau.
